SEC’s Moloney Set to Overhaul Crypto, Earnings, and Regulatory Framework
James Moloney is poised to reshape the SEC's approach to cryptocurrency regulation, corporate earnings disclosures, and rule modernization upon his return to the agency next month. A veteran of the SEC's Division of Corporation Finance from 1994-2000, Moloney brings institutional knowledge rather than rookie enthusiasm to his new role.
The division handles core market oversight - scrutinizing financial reports, enforcing risk disclosure requirements, and ensuring accounting compliance. It also oversees executive compensation reporting and has recently taken an active role in crypto guidance. The team has notably excluded memecoins and stablecoins from securities classification, placing it at the center of ongoing regulatory debates.
"I am eager to work with Jim, Cicely, and others to modernize our rules and reduce disclosure burdens," said SEC Chair Gary Gensler, acknowledging the division's critical market function. Moloney himself signaled ambitious plans: "There is much to be done."
